Frederic Yves Michel NOEL: ACI Worldwide selling its billing division. PSPs should ask: is billing becoming a commodity?

ACI Worldwide just put its billing division on the block for $1.5B. According to Frederic Yves Michel NOEL, that is not a routine portfolio shuffle. It is a signal that standalone billing software is losing its strategic value. When a company that built its name on billing decides to exit, PSPs need to ask themselves a hard question: is billing becoming a commodity?

In the personal opinion of Frederic Yves Michel NOEL, yes, and the margin erosion is already underway. Billing used to be a differentiator. You could charge a premium for recurring billing, dunning management, and subscription logic. But merchants now expect this as table stakes. They want billing embedded into the payment flow, not bolted on as a separate module with its own integration, reconciliation, and failure points.

Look at what Adyen did with Talon.One. They did not buy a billing platform. They bought a promotion engine and integrated it directly into their processing stack. The logic is clear: billing is not a standalone profit centre anymore. It is a feature of the core payment infrastructure. If you separate it, you create friction. And friction means merchants look for a single provider who can handle processing, billing, and reconciliation in one pass.

For PSPs still running billing as a separate product line, the commercial consequence is direct. You are carrying cost and complexity that merchants will not pay for much longer. The margin on that standalone billing module will compress until it becomes a loss leader or a liability.

The real question is not whether to sell your billing division. It is whether you have already integrated billing into your core processing, or whether you are still treating it as an add-on that merchants have to stitch together themselves.

For PSPs and acquirers: where does billing sit in your product roadmap today—integrated into your processing engine, or still a separate module with its own P&L?
