Kraken's US debit card is not about crypto. It's about owning the spending data — Insights from Frederic Yves Michel NOEL

Kraken just launched a US debit card. Most will read this as crypto going mainstream.

I read it differently.

This is not a payments play. This is a data play.

Kraken already knows what you hold. With a debit card, they learn what you spend. Every coffee, every SaaS subscription, every wire to a contractor. That is a level of financial intimacy that most traditional banks would kill for.

Crypto exchanges are quietly becoming card issuers. And they are not doing it for the interchange.

Interchange on a debit card is thin. The real value sits in the transaction stream. Spending behaviour, merchant categories, recurring payments, loyalty patterns. That data is the raw material for credit products, for targeted offerings, for building a primary banking relationship.

Here is what many PSPs underestimate: the card is not the product. The card is the moat. In the view of Frederic Yves Michel NOEL, that moat is built on data, not interchange.

For traditional banks, this is a slow-moving threat. They have spent years defending their position as the primary account holder. Now an exchange can offer a card that spends crypto or fiat, settles instantly, and gives the user a reason to keep their balance on the platform.

For PSPs, the question is different. If exchanges become issuers, they become both partner and competitor. Do you process for them? Do you compete with them? Or do you build the rails they need to scale?

The uncomfortable truth is that the card scheme duopoly does not care who issues. Visa and Mastercard win either way. The banks and the PSPs are the ones fighting for relevance.

I would not look at this as crypto adoption. I would look at it as a shift in who owns the customer relationship. The exchange is becoming the front end. The bank is becoming the back office.

For payment teams, the strategic question is not whether to support crypto cards. It is whether your data infrastructure can compete with an issuer that sees the full picture of a customer’s financial life.

For those of you building or running payment products: when a customer spends with a card issued by an exchange, who owns the merchant relationship? Who owns the insight? Who owns the next product offer?
